When Staples “jumped the shark”

So yesterday I made a trip up to Staples, to get some pens and more printer paper.

Who shops at Staples? Can’t tell by me; staff outnumbered customers.

And no wonder. The prices are, as Crazy Eddie used to say, “insane!”

$12 for a ream of 24-lb paper? Ahem. CVS has the same brand, for $9 (or at Walmart for $7.50).

$7.99 for a four-pack of Pilot Flair pens? They’re about $5.25 from Amazon, delivered.

Wow. Just wow.

Never again, methinks.

  1. Yeah, remember when Staples was the place to get the best prices on office supplies? Their stores have adapted really poorly to the changing market. They’ve done a bit better in jumping into other services for SMBs (outsourced IT, etc.). And their Copy & Print center stores still make sense: small, convenient locations with a handful of “staple” office supplies, but with an emphasis on full-service and self-service copying & printing.
